Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is a medically necessary and cost-effective way of treating and controlling many preventable
diseases and medical conditions. It involves the assessment of a person's nutritional status followed by the development and
implementation of appropriate nutritional therapy.
According to the U.S. Surgeon General's Report on Nutrition and Health, eight of the ten leading causes of death, including
Coronary Heart Disease, stroke, some types of cancer, and Diabetes Mellitus are related to diet.
According to NHANES III (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey), 54.9% of U.S. adults aged 20 years and older are
either overweight or obese, a health concern that can be markedly reduced through proper nutrition.
A multi-center, ten-year study (on insulin-dependent Diabetes Mellitus) demonstrated that optimal glycemic control,
through diet related behaviors, reduced the risk of Diabetes complications by 60%.
