In the world of holistic and homeopathic healthcare, two practices have stood the test of time for their effectiveness and ability to help the body heal naturally: cupping therapy and chiropractic care. Used separately, they each offer powerful benefitsβbut when combined, they create a synergistic effect that amplifies results, especially for those seeking relief from chronic pain, muscle tightness, stress, and mobility issues.
At The Hetrick Center, we donβt just stop at one approach. Our unique integrated care model combines chiropractic, physical therapy, aquatic therapy, massage therapy, and more to offer you a well-rounded path to optimal health. Here’s why cupping and chiropractic care are such a dynamic duoβand how our comprehensive services provide everything you need to feel your best.
What is Cupping Therapy and How Does It Work?
Cupping therapy dates back thousands of years and is most commonly associated with traditional Chinese and Middle Eastern medicine. It involves placing special cupsβusually made of glass, silicone, or bambooβon the skin. These cups create a vacuum or suction that lifts the skin and underlying muscle tissue, increasing circulation and promoting healing.
How Does Cupping Help?
- Stimulates Blood Flow: The suction draws blood to the surface, helping oxygen and nutrients reach areas that are tense or damaged.
- Relieves Muscle Tension: Perfect for athletes or those with sedentary jobs, cupping loosens tight muscles and fascia.
- Detoxifies the Body: Cupping helps stimulate the lymphatic system, encouraging the removal of toxins.
- Reduces Inflammation: By improving circulation, it can reduce inflammation and accelerate recovery.
- Promotes Relaxation: The calming effect of cupping helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress and anxiety.
Many patients describe the experience as deeply relaxingβeven more so when combined with chiropractic care or massage.

The Role of Chiropractic Care in Whole-Body Wellness
Chiropractic care is a form of manual therapy that focuses on aligning the spine and joints. When the spine is out of alignment, it can compress nerves, strain muscles, and create imbalances throughout the body. Chiropractors use gentle, precise adjustments to correct misalignments (called subluxations) and restore normal function.
Why Chiropractic Care is More Than Just “Back Cracking”:
- Improves Nervous System Function: A properly aligned spine ensures that signals between your brain and body flow freely.
- Reduces Pain Naturally: Many patients find relief from back pain, neck pain, joint issues, and even headaches without medication.
- Increases Range of Motion: By restoring joint mobility, chiropractic adjustments help you move more freely and comfortably.
- Supports Long-Term Wellness: Regular chiropractic care can be preventative, helping maintain good posture, spinal health, and balance.

Cupping + Chiropractic: A Healing Combination
While chiropractic adjustments target the structural alignment of the spine and joints, cupping works on the soft tissuesβmuscles, fascia, and connective tissueβthat surround and support those structures. When used together:
- Cupping prepares the muscles for adjustment, making chiropractic treatments more effective and comfortable.
- Chiropractic care stabilizes the structure, allowing the benefits of cupping to last longer.
- Both therapies help reduce inflammation and pain, supporting a faster and more complete healing process.
This combination is particularly powerful for conditions such as:
- Chronic back or neck pain
- Sports injuries
- Migraines and tension headaches
- Sciatica
- Fibromyalgia
- Postural imbalances

What to Expect After Cupping Therapy
If youβre new to cupping, one of the most common questions is about the round marks left on the skin after a session. These marks are completely normal and part of the therapeutic process.
Why Do Cupping Marks Occur?
The suction from the cups pulls blood and other fluids to the surface of the skin, much like a deep tissue bruise. This is not a sign of damage but rather stagnant blood and toxins being released from deep tissue layers. The intensity and color of the marks can vary based on the level of tension and congestion in the muscles.
What You Should Know About Cupping Marks:
- They are not painful. The marks may look dramatic but they donβt typically hurt.
- They usually fade within 3 to 10 days. The duration varies by individual and by how much stagnation was present.
- Darker marks indicate more congestion or stagnation, which typically lessens with future sessions.

Post-Cupping Care Tips:
- Stay warm and hydrated. Drinking water helps flush out toxins released during the treatment.
- Avoid hot showers, saunas, or intense exercise for 24 hours. Your skin may be sensitive, and heat can intensify the markings.
- Let your skin breathe. Avoid applying heavy lotions, creams, or oils right away unless recommended by your therapist.
- Rest if you feel fatigued. Itβs normal to feel deeply relaxed or even a bit tired after a sessionβthis is your bodyβs way of healing.
